When a dirt block is adjacent to a grass block and is exposed to a light level of at least 4, it is eventually converted into a grass block at random intervals. Mycelium spreads in similar fashion, but requires a light level of at least 9. Grass Blocks can be used to grow Tall Grass and Flowers when sprinkled with Bone Meal Sheep feed on grass and will regrow their wool. Use grass to create lawns or colorful horizontal patterns.

This article is about Dirt. For the similar block, see.“I don't really need to tell you where to find dirt, because you'll generally acquire stacks and stacks of it during the course of normal play. To stop it filling up your chests, consider using it to fill in terrain, rather than dig it out, when you want to flatten an area. Or make a farm out of it - growing anything from saplings to beetroot.
Or just use it to convert the dirt shack you built to protect you from zombies on the first night into an enormous dirt palace with all mod cons.„— Duncan GeereDirt is a found abundantly in most under a layer of grass blocks at the top of the. Grass paths are decorative blocks.
- 1Occurrence
Occurrence[edit]
Natural generation[edit]
Grass paths are naturally generated in villages when pathways replace grass blocks.
Post-generation[edit]
![Block Block](https://gamepedia.cursecdn.com/minecraft_gamepedia/4/44/Grass_Block_Revision_6.png)
Grass paths can be created by using any type of shovel on the side or top of a grass block that has air above it. The shovel will lose 1 durability.
Obtaining[edit]
In Java Edition, grass paths can only be gathered in the inventory using commands or pick block. When mined, even with a Silk Touch tool, they drop dirt. In Bedrock Edition, grass paths may be mined with Silk Touch tools and drop itself.

Usage[edit]
Grass paths are primarily used for decoration, although they do prevent hostile mobs from spawning. They are a similar color to grass blocks placed in a desert or savanna biome. A notable difference is they are only 15⁄16th of a block high, therefore items that require a full block like torches and buttons cannot be placed on them.
A grass path block will convert to dirt if any block with a solid material is placed on top.
